Job Title: Program Specialist

Job Status: Full-time

Summary:

This position is located in the Education Department of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The incumbent serves as Program Specialist with responsibility coordinating and maintaining successful Museum lecture programs, as well as other public programs, for audiences of all ages, including target and new audiences. 

Duties:

As the Museum Specialist, you will:

  • Work with appropriate subject matter experts and museum staff to develop aerospace lecture ideas that support program strategy and intended target audiences.
  • Organize and execute lectures/programs by coordinating speakers/program participants and all logistics.
  • Work with production team and other museum departments to ensure all virtual, on-site, and/or audiovisuals arrangements are meticulously met.
  • Work with supervisor and department leadership on developing program budgets.
  • Procure services and supplies and track spending to keep within budget guidelines.

Qualification requirements, including one year time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the GS-09 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-07 it must include:

  • Experience in coordinating the implementation of lectures and other possible museum programs.
  • Experience leading staff and volunteers to ensure programs are planned and executed, creating budgets and tracking spending.
  • Experience assisting with the creation of appropriate marketing plans, promotional materials for the programs, and supporting tracking on audiences and program evaluation.


To qualify for the GS-09 on Education alone, you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or have been awarded a master’s or equivalent graduate degree. You can also qualify based on a combination of graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
