As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming more than one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided-missile submarine.
 
The Museum seeks a fulltime Museum Educator/Coordinator for Access Programs to support grant-funded projects and program expansions. This position is guaranteed through December 2023, with strong possibility of extension. This position will support the development and delivery of accessible educational resources and programs, as well as the logistics and coordination of expanded Museum- and community-based programming. 
This position will report to the Director of Access Initiatives. The position will include training in best practices in working with people with dementia and their care partners, and opportunities to grow skills in developing accessible programs and digital resources.

Responsibilities

  • Help ensure that the interpretative materials are accessible for all potential users. This includes supporting the expansion of the Museum’s accessible mobile guide.
    • Tasks may include reviewing or writing visual descriptions and alt text and supporting other digital accessibility best practices.
  • Review and help adapt resources and lessons for diverse learners, including those with developmental, intellectual or learning disabilities
  • Monitor access program registration and respond to questions over email and phone in a timely and courteous manner;
  • Conduct research on and outreach to memory care centers, schools, veteran service organizations, day habilitation programs, and other organizations;
  • Coordinate transportation (car service) for program participants for 6-8 Tea Dance programs for people with dementia per year;
  • Assist with scheduling teaching artists for offsite programs;
  • Coordinate with Education Coordinator to schedule offsite and special programs and update Museum databases;
  • Support evaluation work (collecting participant data, user expert testing, etc.)
  • Opportunities to assist with and teach other Access programming for visitors with disabilities and to grow professionally.

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies or a related field (Master’s and/or teacher certification, a certificate of training in special education or access a plus). Strong communication skills (email, phone and in person). Administrative and outreach experience (both professional and volunteer experience welcome), including maintaining contacts, comfort with spreadsheets and organization. Interest in and some familiarity with museum/arts programming for people with disabilities, veterans, and individuals with dementia and their care partners. Related experience and knowledge of working with or developing materials for varied populations, particularly those with disabilities in an educational setting. Working knowledge of digital accessibility standards and best practices. Basic understanding of object- and inquiry-based pedagogical practices. Commitment to accessibility and inclusion in cultural organizations. Experience working with community advisers preferred. Experience with Tessitura or other databases a plus. Multilingual or bilingual a strong plus.

Compensation & Workplace Notes

Salary: $40,000, plus benefits
This position is a grant position for two years (through December 2023) with strong possibility of extension.
 
This is a fulltime position, mostly during business hours (weekdays, 9am-5pm) with some evenings and weekends required. A hybrid schedule (mix of working in the office and from home) is possible, but the Access Educator/Coordinator is expected to be onsite for programs. Due to the historic nature of the ship, certain areas of the Museum are accessible only by stairs or ladder. The office is generally quiet but is impacted regularly by noise from the Museum’s exhibitions and simulators (noise reduction headphones are available). All staff, volunteers, vendors and visitors must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and a mask mandate is currently in effect.
