Regional Site Administrator at Historic New England

Historic New England is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking, and inclusive collaborator to serve as our lead on the North Shore of Massachusetts. A creative thinker experienced in developing and leading interpretive tours while creating innovative and engaging programs, the Regional Site Administrator plays a key role as a member of our Visitor Experience team. This individual leads the charge in providing the greatest public access to historic sites and programs through creative initiatives that meet attendance and revenue targets set by the organization, to work with development staff to grow regional fundraising, and to involve all staff working in the region in doing the same.

Classification: Full time; exempt

Location: Salem, Massachusetts; Partial-remote work optional; Periodic regional travel required

Key Roles and Responsibilities: The Regional Site Administrator, North Shore of Massachusetts is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:

  • Coordinates all public activities involving Historic New England historic sites on the North Shore of Massachusetts
  • Supervises site managers responsible for the properties in the region, and has broad oversight authority for planning, budgeting, implementation, and operation of activities
  • Act as key staff liaison to communities and constituents in the region, staying informed of opportunities and issues, promoting collaborations, and identifying earned income and fundraising potential
  • The regional site administrator has responsibility and flexibility to utilize regional staff, equipment, and other resources across sites as appropriate to fulfilling regional goals
  • Initiates and manages efforts to fulfill organizational strategic goals in the region through innovative marketing, public programs, general tours, group tours, private events, constituent and donor relations, and community relations
  • Meets or exceeds established museum attendance, revenue, and membership goals. Develops and proposes annual regional work plan and museum budgets. Prepares visitation, financial, and operations reports
  • Oversees daily operations at three North Shore sites (Phillips House and Gedney House in Salem, Mass. and Boardman House in Saugus, Mass.), working closely with the Salem Lead Guide
  • Hires, trains, and supervises site managers, provides administrative, collegial, and on-site support to facilitate the operation of the historic sites
  • Works with the development team in growing Historic New England fundraising program on the North Shore of Massachusetts

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or exemption approved by Historic New England prior to the start date of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, preferably in American history, business, art or cultural history, historic preservation or museum studies
  • Four years job-related experience with non-profit institutions managing historic site operations, including financial skills
  • Prior supervisory experience, problem solving ability, and familiarity with team approach and multi-tasking
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills, and interpersonal and collaborative skills to work in a team environment
  • Experience developing and leading interpretive tours and creating innovative public programs and volunteer programs
  • Fully competent computer skills, including use of MS Office suite software for word processing and spread sheets
  • Valid driver’s license and/or means of transportation required
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours as required

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Understanding of and passion for Historic New England’s mission and strategic focus

Salary: $55,000 – $58,000
