Internships at Knight Foundation allow promising college students and recent graduates an opportunity to gain 10 weeks of experience at one of the largest private foundations in the United States. We offer competitive paid internships in several areas. Knight’s interns help us provide the 26 communities we serve with the tools to shape their own futures.
2022 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is seeking applicants for a paid internship opportunity. The selected intern will spend 10 weeks (starting June 7) working on the internship in the designated city. The intern will be compensated at $18 per hour.

MIAMI
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (MIAMI)
Overview
Contribute to the growing field of data-driven philanthropic strategies, increasing the impact of Knight Foundation’s Community and National Initiatives program’s mission by allowing the team to make evidence-based decisions and continuously adjust tactics to take into account new trends and realities on the ground. People who are Computer Science majors, or haverelated applied/exact sciences profiles, will have a deeper understanding about the deployment of quantitative methods in real life scenarios, and about the impact these tools can have when implemented.
Requirements
- Undergraduate or graduate student specializing in Computer Science, Data Science, Urban Affairs, Public Administration, Political Science, Architecture, Urbanism, Quantitative Methods and Statistics
- Interest in developing hands-on data analytics skills; interest or experience working in the nonprofit sector; and strong interest in urban affairs and how these are impacted by data science and technology
- Strong research and analytical capabilities; able to synthesize large volumes of research and data to guide decision making; and develop working proficiency for the rest of the team in a variety of technical fields.
- Proficiency using at least one common programming language for data analytics (e.g. SQL, R, or Python) and/or business intelligence and data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, or equivalent) to deliver clear and compelling insights to non-technical audiences
ARTS PROGRAM (MIAMI)
Overview
Knight Foundation’s Arts team seeks to further understand digital readiness in arts organizations, and to identify key performance metrics that might be used to assess an organization’s digital capacity. This work would build upon the “Digital Readiness and Innovation in Museums” report, and expand on that work to include the entire scope of arts and culture organizations that Knight supports. The intern will perform a literature review of both Knight Foundation and field research and writing; read, compile and summarize relevant content from previous Arts grantmaking; in cooperation with the Arts team, develop a digital capacity/maturity framework drawing on the literature and grantmaking reviews; and present the framework and related findings to Knight staff.
Requirements
- Graduate student specializing in digital humanities, arts administration, library sciences and informatics
- Familiarity with arts organizations is preferred
- Knowledge of one or more of the following would be required: information technology, web development, software development, data visualization, social media management/digital marketing, learning/assessment or information visualization.
GRANTS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT (MIAMI)
Overview
We want to further strengthen our Fluxx system as the source of truth by taking a deep dive in evaluating the data integrity of our Donor-Advised Funds.. Additionally, the intern will strengthen our focus on increasing better outcomes for our grantmaking experience by evaluating the current grant/DAF form and grantee portal.
Requirements
- Graduating senior (undergrad) or 1st year graduate student specializing in business management, product management, consumer research, human-computer interaction, interaction design and information architecture degree programs
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Data centric; Excel; survey development; exposure to design thinking; and UI/UX experience
- Great communicator – verbal and written
COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT (MIAMI)
Overview
The Communications department is seeking to evaluate its digital marketing reach and presence with a goal of discovering new audiences. Working with the VP/Communications and Director of Digital Strategy, the intern would conduct market research and compare it to the Foundation’s current digital marketing presence (including SEO and advertising). Based on the findings, the intern would then present recommendations for areas of improvement.
Requirements
- Graduate or undergraduate (junior or senior preferred with previous internship experience), specializing in marketing, business, communications, computer science, Journalism, PR and other related fields.

PHILADELPHIA
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (PHILADELPHIA)
Overview
Create a series of five 3-5 min. video clips highlighting the impact of Knight Foundation’s work in Philadelphia’s public spaces through storytelling. These stories will be shared over social media and Knight’s website at the end of the internship.
Requirements
- Undergraduate or graduate student specializing in Media Arts, Photo/Video Journalism, Video or Film Production, Communications and Marketing
- Creative individual who enjoys connecting with others; thrives in a fast-paced environment; and basic understanding of how to create engaging video content for social media
- Experience with audio and video recordings, familiarity with editing software
DETROIT
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (DETROIT)
Overview
Assistance in the development of a system of visual assets that can be leveraged by the community to enhance existing neighborhood framework plans created by Knight Foundation’s work in Detroit. Collaborate with key stakeholders on a collective brand identity system that can be visually/conceptually connected across all media platforms, from print to screen and static to dynamic. Intern will utilize inclusive design techniques for interviews to connect quickly with Knight’s partners and grantee organizations, and craft compelling stories and storyboards that best represent the vision of the neighborhood.

- Highly creative
- Strong visual language and communications skills
- Some fashion, lifestyle/culture brand, or auto design experience
CHARLOTTE, NC
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (CHARLOTTE, NC)
Overview
Knight Foundation’s Charlotte program is seeking to understand best practices and the best approach to mitigate the negative impacts of gentrification, such as displacement and the rising cost of housing and commercial property. At the end, the summer the intern will present best practices and share recommendations and approaches for the West End and Charlotte based on the ease of implementation and impact. TheIntern will conduct research and comparative analysis and interview government and resident experts on anti-displacement strategies.

- Graduate school candidate with strong research abilities. Specializing in Public Policy, City Planning or Economics

SAN JOSE, CA
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (SAN JOSE)
Overview
We want to strengthen our relationships with Employee Resource Groups at tech companies to help connect those organizations more closely to San Jose. The intern will compile lists of employee resource groups at tech companies, including providing primary contact for each. Look for intersections to Knight’s National Technology and San Jose grants to identify intersections and opportunities. Organize convenings over the summer between employee resource groups and community/government organizations that are working with adjacent technology areas.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will come from the South Bay area (Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties) and study undergraduate or graduate courses in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Political Science or Public Policy at a university or community college. People with technology interest or prior experience are especially encouraged. Multilingual in any two languages (with English being required) is desirable. They need to be prepared to work from home when required by circumstances or from our shared-workspace in downtown San Jose.

COMMUNITIES PROGRAM (SAN JOSE)
Overview
Knight wants to operate an open innovation contest in San Jose in cooperation with the City of San Jose and local tech companies. The intern will help establish the operating parameters, infrastructure and relationships for the competition. The competition aims to build a technology prototype to resolve a community issue in San Jose.
The intern will compile the rules for the competition, organize the workflow and major timing.
Work with the Knight Communications department on the launch and rollout plan. Identify local technology company partners, who are also seeking to address the problem and can serve as partners.
Requirements
