Assistant Exhibition Designer at the Toledo Museum of Art

SUMMARY
The Assistant Exhibition Designer assists the Head Exhibition Designer with planning, designing, and installations of temporary and permanent collection and exhibitions, as well as campus wide projects.  This position manages the Preparators, processes work orders and maintains the work calendar.  This position works in the Collections and Curatorial Affairs department. reports to, and works closely with the Head Exhibition Designer to ensure that the design process is comprehensive and thorough. 
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Consults with Curators and Head Exhibition Designer to produce drawings for installations of the permanent collection and small-scale exhibitions including exhibition furniture
  • Opportunity to design, under the supervision of the Head Exhibition Designer, small scale exhibitions (under 1000 square feet)
  • Participates in design review process with Curatorial and Graphic Design staff
  • Produces shop drawings using appropriate design software
  • Manages the Preparators and the Preparator calendar, including logistics and scheduling of Preparator work orders, approving timecards and requests for time off
  • Works closely with the Exhibitions Coordinator regarding installation timelines and activities
  • Assists in budget preparation with the Head Exhibition Designer and the Senior Manager of Exhibitions & Collections
  • Assists with lighting design; Orders lighting, exhibition, and installation related supplies
  • Maintains inventory of related exhibition elements such as casework, pedestals, etc.
  • Maintains and establishes vendor relationships
  • Produces and updates exhibition drawings for archival purposes
  • Participates in discussions regarding graphic design elements and lighting for exhibitions
  • Participates in Exhibition team meetings and other relevant discussions with museum staff
  • Participates in short- and long-term projects including campus wide projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 
                                                 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in an art related field required, Master of Fine Arts preferred
  • At least 1-2 years’ supervisory experience required
  • 1-2 years’ work experience in museum or gallery strongly preferred
 
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of construction methods and ability to read architectural drawings required
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques required
  • Knowledge of museum display standards and familiarity of museum techniques for installation preferred
  • Knowledge of museum installation standards in concert with conservation issues preferred
  • Knowledge of lighting design preferred
  • Experience with a variety of design software such as Vectorworks and SketchUp preferred
  • Highly organized with ability to prioritize a diverse number of projects in a deadline driven environment
  • Ability to problem solve and quickly make decisions when necessary
  • Eagerness to learn from successes, criticisms, and failures in a responsible and reasonable manner
  • Excellent communication skills demonstrated through exceptional interpersonal ability
  • Works effectively under pressure
  • Highly collaborative with ability to work productively in an independent environment
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer and printer noise.  Position requires ability operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer and phone system; May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds; Support given to various departments across campus may result in occasional exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions.
