Associate Curator at Brown University
Job Title: Associate Curator
Job Status: Full-time
Salary: $47,000 – $75,000
Location: Providence, RI
Description
The Associate Curator works in collaboration with the Director to provide the intellectual and artistic content of the Brown Arts Institute’s exhibition program. The Associate Curator is responsible for developing and overseeing exhibitions in the David Winton Bell Gallery and List Lobby, in addition to other exhibitions across campus to complement both the artistic and academic initiatives of the BAI. The Associate Curator is responsible for access to the gallery’s permanent collection of more than 7000 artworks and for the care and maintenance of the collection in collaboration with the Registrar, facilitating the use of the collection for classroom and individual study. The Associate Curator serves as a representative of the BAI across campus and within the art community of Providence and beyond.
The Associate Curator is a new position under the newly formed Brown Arts Institute, and as such, the candidate chosen for this position will work closely with the Exhibitions Director and BAI leadership to advance the needs not only of the Bell Gallery, but of the broader BAI exhibitions program. A greater emphasis on curricular engagement with the gallery’s exhibitions and collections will bring the Associate Curator together with faculty and students across campus. The Associate Curator must foster and maintain collegial, collaborative relationships with Bell and BAI leadership and with faculty and students. The Associate Curator should be able to fill in for the Exhibitions Director at high-level meetings when asked, and be able to speak knowledgeably about the Gallery’s programs and policies, as well as the broader BAI exhibitions program. The Associate Curator will represent the Gallery and BAI on campus and in the community.
Some evening and weekend work is required, as is occasional travel to artist studios, art fairs and biennials, and for advancement purposes.
