Position Summary:

The Early Learning Coordinator leads the efforts to deliver inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning experiences for the Museum’s early learners in support of the mission.  In collaboration with the Education, Learning, Research and Exhibits departments, they work to provide high-quality visitor-facing experiences which embody joy, creativity, curiosity, and kindness.

This position requires experience in and knowledge of early childhood practice and its relevance to informal learning, schools, and professional development. This position also requires organization, communication, and excellent teamwork skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  Interns, volunteers

Essential Job Functions:

  • Creates a welcoming experience for young learners with authentic and engaging learning experiences that embody joy, creativity, curiosity, and kindness for educators, students, and multi-generational groups
  • Develops hands-on learning experiences independently and collaboratively with the Education Manager, Manager of Art Education, Manager of Maker Education, Museum Educators, and others
  • Develops and delivers programming (both scheduled and pop-up programs) activating the Children’s Museum’s exhibit spaces for early learners and their families
  • Provides support for the Nursery Exhibit for visitors and organized groups to grow the Nursery as a vibrant, integral and essential element of the Museum experience
  • Supports Education staff and early learner experiences throughout the Children’s Museum Campus

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Actively seeks opportunities to bring authentic experiences to early learners and their families in safe, inspirational, and innovative ways
  • Works with Business Development and Exhibits teams to provide early childhood content and perspectives to programs, exhibits, written materials, and publications relevant to early learners and their families
  • Oversees the ongoing development and delivery of educational offerings that grow in impact over time, incorporate the Museum values of joy, creativity, kindness and curiosity, and are clearly aligned to the Museum mission
  • Collaborates collegially with other teams and departments, including in the design and implementation of professional development and cross-departmental programs
  • Coordinates with Managers to provide cross-training and professional development for staff
  • Builds and sustains collaborative relationships with organizations and educators in the nation, region, and locally
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: 

  • 3-4 years of experience in an appropriate related field required, including direct experience interacting with young children and families. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Substitution of years of experience may be considered equivalent to formal educational training.

Experience:

  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with early learners required; additional experience with multi-generational groups, educators, and administrators strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of formal and informal learning approaches, early childhood development, and best practices for early learner programming.
  • Strong problem-solving experience, flexible thinking, and ability to adjust expectations and actions with an open mind

  • Highly organized with excellent communication skills
  • Takes initiative and is able to work with a team but also work independently

Physical Requirements, and Equipment Usage:

  • Walking, Standing, and Sitting: The duties and responsibilities associated with this position will be performed in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for approximately 75% of the workday, and will require movement throughout museum spaces to interact with visitors, educators, and to activate museum experiences.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting and moving of furniture, equipment, and supplies weighing up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Manual Dexterity: The Early Learning Coordinator may operate various equipment, including but not limited to power tools, sharp tools, etc.

Work Environment, Hours of Work, and Travel Requirements:

  • Weekend availability is required, and evening availability is occasionally required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Essential duties of this position will be performed in a museum environment, which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.

Clearances:

  • FBI fingerprint, PA Child Abuse (Act 33) and PA Criminal (Act 34) Clearances are required.
