(Internship) Media Conservation Intern at the Museum of the Moving Image

Description:

Museum of the Moving Image is seeking a Media Conservation intern to participate in work related to the cultivation and maintenance of the Museum’s time-based media collection. This is a 3 month paid internship, approximately 8-12 hours per week, beginning in mid-February. The intern will be required to work on-site at the Museum, located in Queens, NY. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, the Media Conservation intern will also work closely with the Collections team. The position offers an opportunity to engage with a dynamic cultural institution and to acquire cutting edge knowledge of digital repositories for variable media art and artifacts. The successful candidate will be a self-starter and a team player, who enjoys research and problem solving. They will have interests that align with the needs of cultural institutions, a particular interest in time-based media conservation, and enjoy working collaboratively with Curatorial and Collections departments.

Responsibilities include:

-Hands on experience with a working station for quality control and ingestion of born-digital and digitized art and artifacts.

-Write, edit, and assist in the narratives for conservation case studies.

-Research analogous case studies within and outside of the museum’s collection.

-User test collection management software.

-Catalog case studies and previously acquired media art objects, digital artifacts, and artwork.

-Assist with technical questionnaires.

Requirements:

-B.A. in art history, library science, museum studies, digital archiving, conservation or related field. M.A. preferred, but not required.

-Demonstrated experience with media conservation.

-Familiarity with film studies, screen studies, material culture, media arts, and/or related fields.

-Excellent research and writing skills.

-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

-Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and other standard office procedures and skills.

-Experience using a collections management database is a plus.
