Description:

The Digital Scholarship Librarian (DSL) leads HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) Outreach and Education Services as the Associate Director of Outreach and Education to engage with faculty, academic staff, and students on scholarly computational uses of the HathiTrust collection. Working between HathiTrust central staff at University of Michigan and HTRC staff located at Indiana University and the University of Illinois, the DSL helps HathiTrust identify opportunities to improve the seamless provision of HathiTrust services across the entire enterprise, and to recognize training needs for scholarly users of HathiTrust’s services.

The Digital Scholarship Librarian has a unique bridging role. You are an employee of HathiTrust at the University of Michigan, reporting to the Collections and Access Lead for HathiTrust, and contributing to the digital scholarship mission of HathiTrust. As Associate Director, Outreach & Education, you also work as an essential member of the HathiTrust Research Center, based at Indiana University and the University of Illinois.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to annual planning for HTRC and establishing priorities
  • Communicate with partners about important HTRC projects and plans
  • Set the annual goals for the HTRC Outreach and Educational Service (OES) unit and manage the completion of the OES goals.
  • Provide oversight for the daily operations of HTRC outreach and manage staff at Illinois and Indiana who work as the OES team.
  • Manage workshop program and logistics
  • Deliver in-person and web-based training and coordinating with HathiTrust-member hosting institutions.
  • Create or coordinate creation of training materials and workshop structure and lead the HTRC instructional team, drawn from HTRC staff and student assistants.
  • Recommend improvements to HTRC tools and services based on user feedback, monitor overall user-centered design implementations in HTRC development, and direct the work of the HTRC UX Specialist.
  • Create user support structure, with recruitment, training, and oversight of expert users from HathiTrust member institutions and staff from HathiTrust member libraries who constitute a community of trainers who can support data-driven use of HathiTrust content on their campuses.
  • Working with HT staff responsible for communications, writes HTRC public-facing communications (announcements of technical updates, invitations to register for events, calls for proposals, etc.)

Required Qualifications*

  • 5+ years of experience  in a library, digital scholarship, or research setting with a role related to areas such as outreach, training, research support, and public services.
  • An advanced degree in Library and Information Science, the humanities, social sciences, computer science, or other relevant field.
  • Understanding of text and data mining techniques in the humanities, social sciences, or allied fields.
  • Experience conveying complex information to novice audiences.
  • Experience teaching or developing training and educational materials for in person and online delivery.
  • Commitment to inclusivity in the workplace and in provision of services.
  • Experience motivating volunteers and contributors across a diverse set of organizations and contexts.

 

Additional Information

Appointment is anticipated at the Sr. Associate Librarian or Associate Librarian rank. The salary for this position is anticipated at $61k to $70k for the Associate rank, $70k to $80k for the Sr. Associate rank. The actual salary offered may vary based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library’s process for librarian promotion and advancement.
