The Met’s Department of Education—dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone—is central to the mission of the Museum. The Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation. In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK–12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; performances, concerts, lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The Met seeks a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as part of the Public Programs and Creative Practice team. The Assistant/Associate Educator will envision, plan and implement programs that connect adult museum visitors with creativity, knowledge and ideas. They will conceptualize, develop, and implement virtual and onsite talk-based programs including lectures, symposia, and panel conversations, art history courses, dialogues around timely events, in-gallery conversations, and other interactive experiences; and/or virtual and onsite art making experiences that can include free programs such as drop-in art making in the galleries, and ticketed programs such as studio workshops, and other intimate classes that develop art making skills and exchange of ideas. These programs are produced in collaboration with a broad range of curatorial, conservation, education, and research staff throughout the Museum, as well as teaching artists, guest experts, and external partners. The successful candidate brings innovative perspectives to the content and format of existing programs, and initiates projects with the goal of engaging existing, new and diverse audiences in meaningful experiences.
The ideal candidate has demonstrable experience teaching in a museum environment with varied audiences; a strong art historical and/or studio practice background; and skill engaging diverse groups of stakeholders in working towards common goals.
This position reports directly to the Managing Educator for Public Programs and Creative Practice. This is a permanent, full-time position. Some early morning, evening, and weekend hours required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
· Collaborate and coordinate with curators, research staff, teaching artists, guest artists, and other external experts to conceive, plan and implement meaningful programs which appeal to a broad range of adult audiences.
· Contribute to the master schedule of auditorium, lecture hall, classrooms, and gallery-based events by developing talk-based and/or art making programs
· Develop and implement talk-based and/or art making programs that include ticketed and non-ticketed events, which offer insights into the Met’s art collections, connect visitors to underpinnings of special exhibitions, and/or offer perspectives on timely conversations.
· Contribute programming elements to large-scale museum events that offer hands-on art making, art conversations, and other interactive experiences to general museum visitors.
· Develop and establish high impact, revenue generating studio and art history courses.
· Facilitate gallery-based conversations with original works of art for a range of adult audience groups.
· Oversee all logistics regarding implementation of programs, including overseeing contractual, travel-related, administrative, and financial requirements for program participants
· Develop and monitor budgets for programming, oversee and track statistics, and mine data to identify participation trends and inform resource allocation and workflow. Prepare funding reports and other regular updates.
· Produce content for print and online materials and work to promote and heighten awareness of various Museum events, programs, and projects
· Represent the Education Department across Museum departments
· Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a disability, sincerely held religious belief, or pregnancy, or because you are a victim of domestic violence, stalking, or sex offenses).
Experience and Skills:
· Minimum 3 years of experience for an Assistant Educator, minimum 5 years of experience for an Associate Educator, working in art museums or museum education
· Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
· Knowledge of varied programming practices, platforms, and engagement strategies
· Experience working with artists, scholars and big thinkers to envision public programs
· Knowledge of art making techniques and disciplines
· Strong knowledge of art history across cultures and time periods
· Clear ability to multi-task, and close attention to detail
· Track record of creating and implementing successful lecture-based and art making programs that attract broad audiences
· Demonstrable experience in maintaining key collaborative relationships, in negotiation, and in budgeting within a cultural institution
· Demonstratable experience teaching in a museum environment to wide and diverse audience groups
· Event management/event production experience preferred
· Ability to thrive in a dynamic, team-based environment
Knowledge and Education:
· Master’s degree in museum education, museum studies, art history, studio art, or related field.
· Background in art history and/or studio practice is required
· Exceptional organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
· Full familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required
