Director, Wayne Nowack Museum

Seeking an experienced candidate to serve as the Director of an art museum in upstate New York (Ithaca/Finger Lakes Region).

Responsibilities
The Director steers the vision, brand and program of the museum, keeping in mind the main goal to protect and promote the legacy of the artist and writer Wayne Nowack and share his work with the public. They act as the governing authority of the museum for day-to-day operations, reporting directly to the museum’s founder. The Director works closely with the Founder to develop and promote the institutional mission, ensuring effective organizational planning and adequate resources and enhancing the museum’s public standing and outreach. They are responsible for setting policies for operations, planning for the institution, approving budgets, establishing financial controls and ensuring that adequate resources are available to advance the museum’s mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s in Arts Administration, Museum Studies or similar degree preferred
  • PhD or equivalent a plus
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of work experience in a museum, arts institution, or non profit environment
  • Minimum of 5-7 years spent serving in a senior-level management or leadership position in a museum, arts institution, or non-profit environment
  • This position is on-site. Applicants must be willing to commute or relocate to the Ithaca area. Remote work can be arranged on an as-needed basis.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of modern and contemporary art paired with a dedication to promoting arts education and proven ability to act as an advocate for the arts
  • Independent self-starter with excellent oral, written, visual and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated exceptional ability as a competent, detail-oriented, proactive administrator
  • Keen familiarity with the challenges and complexities of operating a small museum
  • Flexible, efficient and capable of juggling multiple responsibilities/multitasking
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a small team, both on site and remotely
  • Creativity, drive, and the ability to problem-solve under pressure
  • Adept at identifying possible areas of deficiency within the museum’s structure and programming and creating institutional directives that will best represent the artist’s legacy and the museum’s collection
