Assistant Collections Manager—Conservation at Brooklyn Museum

Working with the Senior Manager of Collections and Collections Initiatives, the Assistant Collections Manager addresses preventive conservation and organizational needs for the collection, including Integrated Pest Management, storage, environmental maintenance, handling, installations, and record-keeping.

  • Undergraduate study, training program, or equivalent experience in conservation, art history, or museum studies
  • Experience with registrar, curatorial, and/or collections work resulting in the ability to install, handle, transport, and store a vast range of artworks and maintain an inventory of collections (including component parts such as mounts, media elements, and accessories)
  • Knowledge of museum environmental needs for the long-term preservation of collections
  • Familiarity with the resources and proper use of a wide range of archival material, and experience with collection management databases (TMS)
  • Well organized, with the ability to budget and to order and maintain supplies
  • Strong computer and communication skills
  • Ability to work responsibly, both alone and as part of a team
  • Physical ability to spend up to seven hours standing and perform heavy, difficult tasks, as well as lift up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee movement of art, planning and budgeting of storage moves, and reorganization of collections, working with conservation, registrars, and curatorial staff
  • Maintain location inventory using TMS
  • Closely assist the Collections Manager with storage reorganizations and moves on both small and large scales
  • Coordinate and execute planned and unplanned moving of artworks, working across multiple departments
  • Transport and handle works of art, materials, and exhibition equipment for pick-up and delivery
  • Perform technical work involving care and skill, such as preparing storage housings
  • Complete heavy, difficult tasks, which may require working on or from vehicles, ladders, scaffolds, platforms, etc.
  • Contribute directly to collections care, including cleaning, pest management, and environmental monitoring
  • Actively participate in emergency training and disaster preparedness
  • Various other duties including loading and unloading, packing and unpacking, and moving all crated and uncrated works of art around the Museum and at off-site storage facilities as needed
