Internship at The Jewish Museum – Virtual Summer Institute

The Position:
This eight-week online internship, modeled as a summer institute, is an introduction to every aspect of work at the Jewish Museum happening both onsite and virtually. Learn how museums and other cultural organizations are adapting to our current reality of institutional reckoning and social change and explore the future of museum work with a group of your peers. Meet with the Jewish Museum’s senior leadership to hear about their vision for the Museum, and discuss the work of producing and promoting exhibitions and programs with curators, designers, educators, fundraisers, and digital and communications staff. Special guests from beyond the Museum include artists, curators, exhibition designers, and other leading figures in the art world. 
 
While participating in the Institute, some interns will work in specific departments such as Design, Education, and Development, while others will pursue independent projects. Interns spend 6 hours per week in group presentations and discussion sessions, and 15 hours per week on either department work or other independent projects.
 
Dates: June 21 – August 13, 2021
 
Responsibilities Include:
  • Attend group Zoom sessions each week
  • Completion of department or project work (see application instructions)
  • Participate in group Slack channel
  • Individual check-ins on Zoom
 
Requirements:
  • Current or recently graduated university student (BA or MA level)
  • Interest in museum work and art
  • Ability to participate in a seminar-type discussion
  • Must have internet access and computer with camera

On the internship application form under “type of internship sought,” please indicate which projects and departments you are interested in, selecting at least three of the following:
 
Departments:
  • Collections and Publications: Conduct research about artists for two upcoming exhibitions; correspond with artists’ studios and galleries regarding artist statements and image rights; complete other image rights, image database, and bibliographic work.
  • Curatorial: Research specific topics in art; organize visual material; create and maintain checklists and exhibition documents/presentations; assist with generation and editing of exhibition texts.
  • Design: Help design print and digital assets, prepare design files for production, and assist in defining brand guidelines as part of the Creative Services Department.
  • Development: Research potential donors for exhibitions, programs, and general support in the Development Department; help with grant applications; and learn about various museum fundraising strategies.
  • Education: Assist Education Department staff with planning and implementation of School, Family, Access, and Adult Programs, and learn about various programming formats in the virtual sphere.
  • People and Culture: Learn about diversity work as part of the Human Resources Department; produce and help evaluate culture programs geared towards building employee community; research best practices in DEAI recruitment and help develop thoughtful recruiting strategies. 
Projects:
  • Creative: Make a work of art to present (in any media or genre) that responds to Summer Institute discussions.
  • Research: Produce a written work and presentation about a topic of your choice.
