Volkswagen Fellow for Digital Learning (two years) | Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning Team | Department of Education

The Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning team in the Department of Education at The Museum of Modern Art is seeking the first Volkswagen fellow for Digital Learning, a two-year position with potential to renew or extend. The fellow will play an integral role in fostering online communities and developing innovative approaches to digital engagement and learning in the Museum’s free, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Coursera, and on other free channels such as Khan Academy, moma.org, and MoMA’s YouTube channel. MoMA’s MOOCs provide learning experiences with photography, modern and contemporary art, design, fashion, abstract painting, and museum education, and reach more than 1 million learners from over 250 countries and territories.

The fellow will work closely with the director and associate educator of Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning. They will also collaborate with others, including Education and curatorial staff, and members of the Creative team, including video and audio producers and the MoMA Magazine team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acts as an advocate for learner experience and fostering online communities, particularly in MoMA’s MOOCs, by participating in and facilitating the course discussion forums, communicating with course moderators, monitoring and reporting regularly on course analytics and reviewing, troubleshooting, and contributing to the development of data-informed digital learning strategy by using quantitative and qualitative learner feedback.
  • Works with the Digital Learning team to plan, write, and execute a regular calendar of course activations, including digital programming and content (Live Q&As, Ask Me Anything sessions, discussion forum prompts, MoMA Magazine content, collaborations with MoMA’s social media channels, and more).
  • Participates in brainstorming new approaches to digital learning and engagement in MoMA’s MOOCs and on other free platforms that are participatory, inclusive, and relevant. This includes experimenting with initiatives to create a presence for online communities in the Museum, such as through collaboration with MoMA’s Creativity Lab, and with MoMA’s Community and Access team and School and Teacher programs to activate and share content on accessibility, mental health, and social and emotional Learning.
  • Develops creative, accessible copy and multimedia content for a broad, international audience, including e-newsletters for Coursera learners and @MoMALearning Twitter.
  • Participates in content creation, including planning and providing feedback on audio, video, and text content. Publishes content, including wall label texts and audio stops, on moma.org to increase online accessibility of in-gallery interpretive content.
  • Participates in cross-departmental groups that conduct visitor research, user testing, and advocates for inclusive interpretive content approaches.
  • Provides administrative and project management support for digital learning initiatives, including gathering image assets, clearing image rights, scheduling, following up on deadlines, and archiving course materials.
    Participates in organizing Wikipedia Edit-a-thons at MoMA, including brainstorming programming, and coordinating logistics with internal and external partners.
  • Performs other tasks as required, including participating in occasional offsite, after-hours exhibition meet-ups or programs.

  • Comfort and ease with writing creative and accessible copy for a general public across several channels, including e-newsletters and social media.
  • Interest in or experience with analytics and using quantitative and qualitative user feedback.
  • Skill in working professionally and collaboratively with external partners and with other departments at the Museum.
  • Proactive with strong organizational skills and high attention to detail, including ability to adhere to MoMA’s editorial guides and best practices.
