Milwaukee Public Museum Starr Internship
University Internship Summer 2020 The Milwaukee Public Museum is offering a summer internship for students currently enrolled in a Graduate-Level Museum Studies program. This internship, sponsored by the Betty L. and M. Kenneth Starr Internship Fund, offers a stipend of $4,000 for assistance in travel and living expenses. The award recipient is required to perform at least 150 hours of internship work. A detailed description of the work is included in this document.
Candidates must be enrolled in a Masters or Ph. D. program in Museum Studies. (Students enrolled in an advanced program with an emphasis or certificate in Museum Studies or Museum Science do not qualify for this award.)
Applications should consist of a cover letter, a resume or cv, and two letters of recommendation. The selection of the award recipient will be based on the availability of a compatible internship and the applicant’s present abilities and potential. Application deadline is Friday, March 20, 2020.

Milwaukee Public Museum Digitization Internship Summer 2020

Job Description:
The Digitization Intern will support the development and implementation of new digitization procedures for collections documentation and ephemera (e.g., collector books, field notes, etc.). By working with the Collection Digitization Manager, the Director of Collections Informatics, and other Collections and Research staff, the intern will gain experience with the research and development of archival digitization standards and procedures and have the opportunity to produce training documentation. This internship will focus on the documents that enhance the context of museum collection objects and, upon completion, the procedures will be available to all Collections and Research departments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the review of current digitization policy standards and procedures for documents and ephemera.
- Assist in researching additional standards and developing new scanning workflows.
- Write and test a document scanning procedure.
- Scan and create database records for the archival documents, and append digital assets to object records.
- Assist in the review of current storage for collections documentation and ephemera and assist in any rehousing necessary.
Required Competencies:
- Strong interest in museum collections work and digitization methods.
- Attention to detail.
- Competence in: Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, data entry. Prior experience with museum databases and collections data is preferred.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal.)
- Ability to work well on a team or on individual tasks.
Expected Learned Skills:
- Basic understanding of current museum document digitization equipment, procedures, and the resources available for developing new workflows.
- Evaluating existing procedures & identifying areas for improvement/expansion.
- Research experience in current document digitization standards.
- Writing training documentation.
- Experience in creating and attaching documents in the EMu database.
- Understand how digitizing these supplemental materials contribute to collections care.
