Education Programs Specialist at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

The Education Program Specialist reports to the Director of Education and is responsible for administering and delivering the Museum’s formal and informal education programs developed primarily for school-based audiences (teachers, students and parents/families). This position is responsible for the implementation of all facets of education program delivery, including but not limited to: program conception, development, and coordination with teachers and schools, as well as capturing and analyzing pre- and post-program evaluations.

The Education Program Specialist oversees the coordination and delivery of the Museum’s distance learning initiative, outreach to schools on local, regional and national levels; develops and strengthens new and emerging relationships, as well as collaborates effectively with educators to ensure programs meet their needs. This position also works actively across all the Museum’s departments including Collections & Interpretation staff to create compelling educational content in support of a broad range of interpretive and exhibit projects. Collaboration and effective communication with Guest Services and Group Sales team is also vital.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with educators and schools.
  • Serve as Museum’s liaison with school districts and regions and professional educator organizations and resource groups.
  • Identify and collaborate in expanding the school outreach list, ensuring diverse representation of North Texas schools.
  • Oversee ongoing review of school information in museum database to ensure that appropriate contact details are up-to-date for schools, colleges, homeschool organizations, and other educational organizations.
  • Administer onsite, offsite and distance learning education programs.
  • Administer scheduling and promotion of all distance learning education programs.
  • Administer the development and implementation of all education programs and teacher initiatives.
  • Develop new education programs in conjunction with other museum content specialists, as appropriate.
  • Create and disseminate pre-visit and post-visit follow-up resource materials for teachers.
  • Create and distribute education mailings and promotions including teacher e-blasts, school outreach mailings and online marketing of educational programs.
  • Create the development of education-related content, resources, and support for exhibits and other interpretive projects.
  • Develop and manage professional development opportunities for teachers.
  • Develop and implement strategies for evaluating program impact and expanding education audiences.
  • Collaborate and represent the Museum at school outreach events such as school fairs, after school fairs, homeschool days, History Day contests, etc.
  • Collaborate with Collections with an exhibit and program development as a member of the interpretation team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters’ Degree in history, education, museum studies, museum education, political science or related field preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a public educator or museum programs educator, community engagement or outreach involving education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written and social media communication skills.
  • Experience with data entry and data management.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish, preferred.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and prioritize workflow.
  • Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with internal and external parties (including educators and students of all ages).
  • Ability to handle data management in Access, Excel or other software systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed, based on scheduled educational programs.
