Whitney Family Programs Bilingual Spanish/English Facilitator

The Whitney is partnering with select New York City universities to invite current graduate students in studio art, art or museum education, liberal studies or related fields to apply to facilitate weekend studio programs for families at the Museum.

Family Programs Facilitators will work with Whitney staff to learn about museum teaching strategies and art-making techniques for young children and their families. They will explore techniques in different media and learn how to connect works of art on view at the Museum with studio projects.

Facilitators will be paid $25 an hour to lead drop-in, hands-on Open Studio workshops on Saturdays and Sundays for families with children of all ages. This includes monthly large-scale family events, collaborations with artists, and opportunities to work with other museum audiences.

Responsibilities include:

  • Helping to create a welcoming environment to families with kids of all ages who are participating in Open Studio.
  • Leading hands-on art projects for families designed by the Coordinator of Family Programs in the Museum’s Hearst Artspace.
  • Sharing information about art projects in a developmentally appropriate matter and adjusting communication styles to suit the ages and needs of the audience.
  • Setting up and cleaning up before and after programs.
  • Working with and communicating effectively with volunteers.
  • Attending monthly training meetings and working closely with Museum staff to learn how to teach projects.
  • Completing independent research and reading of materials given by Education staff.
  • Providing written reflections after programs.
  • Working collaboratively and communicating effectively with Family Programs Staff.
  • Working at large-scale events for families of all ages.
  • Helping at other Museum-wide events such as Membership, Teen, Public, and Community, and Access programs.

Requirements:
The candidate must be fluent in English and Spanish. The candidate should be enrolled in a Master’s degree program and interested in learning more about the field of Museum Education; have an interest in working with modern and contemporary art, as well as an ability to connect with kids and adults of all ages; a desire to learn about facilitating art making workshops; be flexible and able to work independently as well as part of a group. Candidates will need to attend the facilitator training meeting one Thursday or Friday afternoon a month. Additionally, candidates must be available to work 1-4 weekend days per month.
