Internships at the National Historic Landmark Stepping Stones – Historic Home of Bill & Lois Wilson, Katonah, NY
This internship offers exposure to many facets of operating and preserving a private, non-profit National Historic Landmark home and archive. Interns become part of a small team that runs Stepping Stones – Historic Home of Bill & Lois Wilson is northern Westchester, NY (60-70 minutes by train from NYC). Stepping Stones preserves multiple historic structures, thousands of objects, and tens of thousands of archived manuscripts. The work that Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Lois Wilson, co-founder of Al-Anon Family Groups, did in the last century continues to save millions of lives today. Stepping Stones inspires recovery by preserving for the public the historic home and archives of key figures in a transformational social movement.
This internship offers exposure to and an opportunity to use your skills in such areas as volunteer relations, training, and recruitment; communications, writing, and social media; visitor services; interpretation; maintenance; preservation; archives; research; administration; and fundraising. Internships of any length are available for potential course credit. This is an opportunity to gain broad museum management skills through a wide array of activities ranging from developing social media posts to leading tours for visitors from around the world. Additionally, candidates may be asked to stand, stoop and lift up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodation provided.
Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assist Executive Director with online and traditional communications projects
- Support Site Operations Manager with historic housekeeping and gardening
- Assist Archives & Collections Coordinator with archive processing and scanning
- Assist the Foundation Assistant with fundraising mailings, database, and office projects
- Other duties as assigned

Length: Flexible; Semester preferred
Internship Dates: Internships can be scheduled any time throughout the year
Hours: Part-time (at least 2 days a week) or full-time (35 hours a week) Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma by start date of internship, an interest in museums, nonprofits, and history, and experience with Microsoft office suite.
Preferred Qualifications: Undergraduate or graduate coursework, minor, major, or degree in nonprofit or arts administration, history, social work, psychology, library science, museum or archival studies,
public relations, marketing, or related field. Prior internships and office experience.
