School Programs Educator: History Programs (Part Time) at Green-Wood Cemetery

Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement of the nineteenth century.  As a historic burial ground that encompasses 478 acres of rolling hills, glacial ponds, and winding pathways, Green-Wood presents an unconventional and unique opportunity for learning. Its educational programming is inspired by the legacies of over 570,000 people who lived their lives in New York City and are now interred at the Cemetery. From the powerful to the downtrodden, from the ornate, private lots of millionaires to the public lots of a diverse population of ordinary citizens who helped build New York City, their life stories, individually and collectively, comprise Green-Wood’s shared history. The Cemetery is also the site of a major battle of the American Revolution and home to a world-class collection of 19th and 20th-century statuary and architecture. It is the only accredited Level III Arboretum in New York City with 8,000 trees and shrubs, and one of the largest green spaces in Brooklyn.

In 2018, Green-Wood was awarded generous funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to deepen and expand both its historical and environmental educational programs for Pre-K-12 students.

Job Summary

The School Programs Educator will train for and lead select school programs on historical and art historical themes in spring and summer, 2019; assist in research and development of new on-site and in-school programs; and teach those programs beginning in fall, 2019. Approx. 20 hrs/week (teaching and office hours will vary week to week)

Compensation: Teaching= $50/hr, Prep/research/admin= $15/hr

Further Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development
  • Assisting in developing training materials for future G-W educators
  • Lead professional development for school teachers and staff
  • Assisting with marketing and outreach efforts with NYC schools
  • Assisting with program evaluation as needed.
  • Administrative tasks associated with booking and recording school visits
  • Creating a welcoming, safe space for all visiting students and school staff from all backgrounds.

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject including, but not limited to: history, museum studies, education, and art history.
  • Experience working with school-aged children in a formal or informal learning environment.
  • Flexible weekday hours
  • Ability to lead walking tours in hilly terrain
  • Strong background in diverse experiences and perspectives in American history, including but not limited to the roles, voices and movements of women; people of color; immigrants; LGBTQ and non-binary-identified persons; religious and other minorities. Special focus on American Revolution through Progressive Era.
  • Solid computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Interest in working for a growing, developing educational department
  • Professional maturity, reliability, good judgment, integrity, warmth, and trust

Strongly preferred:

  • Ability to teach in Spanish or Mandarin
  • Familiarity with historical thinking skills, object inquiry, Pre-K-12 NYCDOE scope and sequence for social studies, NCSS Standards for Social Studies and C3 framework, the Common Core, and 21st Century Skills
  • Experience leading programs for school aged children outdoors
  • Experience teaching with monuments and/or memorials
  • Demonstrated interest in building community, social justice initiatives, and/or fostering cross-institutional partnerships
