Position Focus:

Reporting to the Nolen Curator of Academic Affairs in the Education Department of the Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG), and working closely with Education and Gallery colleagues, the Wurtele Collection Study Center Program and Outreach Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the YUAG’s new Margaret and Angus Wurtele Collection Study Center, a 36,000-square-foot open storage and teaching facility located at the Collection Studies Center at Yale’s West Campus that houses over 33,000 3D objects. Based at the Wurtele Center, s/he helps to develop, test, and facilitate innovative, multi-audience, and cross-disciplinary engagement opportunities in the space with the aim of helping the Gallery realize the Center’s full potential. S/he liaises with relevant Gallery staff to coordinate the Wurtele Center’s study and storage functions and to strengthen partnerships with collaborators on and off campus, ensuring support for and participation in Wurtele Center academic and public programming. S/he also serves as the ambassador and communications hub for all Wurtele Center activities. Ideal candidates will have at least one year of experience working in an art museum or gallery, and at least one year experience teaching from objects or collections. This is a three-year, fixed duration position generously funded by Mary Jo and Ted Shen, B.A. 1966, HON 2001.

Essential Duties:
• In collaboration with the Academic Affairs Coordinator, and in consultation with other Gallery staff, including collections curators, conservation, education, registrarial, art handlers, facilities, and security colleagues, schedules, coordinates, and oversees all activities in the Wurtele Center, including university and school class visits, tours, scholar visits, collection processing and exhibition planning. Helps negotiate solutions for booking conflicts and incompatible uses of the space. Communicates and coordinates with colleagues in The Leslie P. and George H. Hume, B.A. 1969, American Furniture Study Center and other Study/Storage Facilities in the Collection Studies Center at West Campus.
• During the first six months, gains a full understanding of the operations, needs, advantages, challenges, and potential of the space to develop a preliminary course of action and activation. Then, in consultation with the Gallery collection curators, conservators, registrars, art handling, security and facilities staff, proposes and spearheads innovative and creative programming, teaching and learning opportunities, and collaborations for the Wurtele Center and its collections that showcase how the Center can relate to and enrich the curricula, work, and imagination of all audiences: Yale faculty, students and partners as well as youth, school and adult groups, and the broader public.
• Greets and orients professors, students, scholars, and other visitors; leads tours of the Wurtele Center upon request; develops printed and electronic didactic and way-finding materials for the space and its collection; assists with teaching and monitoring of academic and non-academic visits; ensures objects are handled, moved and relocated properly.
• Participates in the YUAG’s West Campus Task Force and the Wurtele Center Working Group.
• Oversees the Wurtele Study Center calendar via EMS and SharePoint, and manages the Wurtele Study Center Sharepoint page.
• Monitors object-study classrooms when staff from curatorial departments are unavailable.
• Stocks classrooms and study bays as required, and assists with A/V, IT equipment and set-up.
• Supervises the work of student workers and interns, as required.
• Participates in regular Gallery meetings as assigned by supervisor.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Essential Duties:

1. In support of the overall mission, plans, directs and oversees programmatic activities.

2. Develops, implements, and maintains operational policies and procedures.

3. Manages program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program.

4. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans.

5. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program.

6. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. Develops metrics to identify and measure the success of the program.

7. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications.

8. Develops and manages the program’s operating budget.

9. Manages the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resources including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs.

10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Well-developed oral and written communication skills.

Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with staff and the public in a knowledgeable and professional manner and a proven track record of working collaboratively with a wide range of audiences and stakeholders.

A high degree of organization and self-motivation, including the ability to take initiative, think creatively, problem solve, anticipate actions needed, exercise independent judgment and bring an entrepreneurial spirit to engaging with collections and constituents.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s Degree in art history, visual arts, museum studies, or art education strongly preferred.

Art handling experience.

Secondary experience in a discipline other than art history or art.

Familiarity with TMS (The Museum System) collections management software.

Experience with program evaluation and feedback processing.

Familiarity with university settings and academic systems.
