Cullman-Payson Fellow in Academic Affairs and Outreach at Yale University Art Gallery

The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman–Joan Whitney Payson Fellowship is a full-time, two-year fellowship intended for an emerging professional considering a career in museum education. Reporting to the Bradley Assistant Curator of Academic Affairs and working closely with colleagues and collaborators across and beyond Yale University, the Fellow will gain broad, hands-on experience in interactive and interdisciplinary teaching with objects; university level outreach and curricular programs; and the execution and evaluation of educational offerings for diverse audiences. The Fellow will participate in the rigorous Wurtele Gallery Teacher training program and learn from museum educators about art-based pedagogies and the collection.

The Cullman-Payson Fellowship resides at the Yale University Art Gallery but is offered in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Fellow will benefit from collaborations between the two museums. The Fellow will be exposed to the planning and implementation of specific endeavors related to cross-disciplinary display, engagement with art objects, and the cultivation of empathy, emotional intelligence, and well-being.

Emerging scholars with an advanced degree in art history, visual studies, museum studies, or a related academic field, as well as a strong interest in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching with collections, the connection between art and health, digital learning, and/or interactive teaching styles, are particularly encouraged to apply. At least one year of experience teaching from objects in a museum setting is required, along with residence in the greater New Haven area for the term of the fellowship and regular travel between New Haven and New York. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. The successful candidate will have excellent communication, interpersonal, research, and writing skills; demonstrated ability to communicate with museum staff and the public in a knowledgeable and professional manner; ability to connect with diverse audiences; and demonstrated ability to take initiative and anticipate actions needed.

Applicants must submit a CV with the names of three references and a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s interest in the fellowship.
