National Blues Museum Curatorial Internship
The National Blues Museum is a non-collecting, cultural museum located in the
heart of Downtown St. Louis. Opened in 2016, NBM is a hands-on institution with
an opportunity to further develop a candidate’s research, exhibition planning, and
curatorial skills.
The National Blues Museum explores and preserves the historic significance of the
Blues as the foundation of American music, celebrates the genre’s various styles
and recognizes the musicians who created, sustain, and continue to advance the
art form.
2019 National Blues Museum Curatorial Internship
Time: June – August 2019 ( 10 – 12 Weeks )
Include research, preparation for future installations and exhibitions.
Interpretation of objects for a range of audiences; all projects will give
interns professional development learning opportunities and provide meaningful
support for the Museum’s initiatives.
Specific duties of this position will include:
Developing research related to the NBM’s upcoming exhibitions. The museum is
a non-collection institution, research will be developed from scratch. The candidate
will assist with drafting interpretive text, assist with acquisition of rights for image
reproduction, and fact-check object files in preparation for exhibition.
The candidate must be reliable, independent, highly organized, attentive to detail,
with excellent writing, and computer skills. Must be able to meet deadlines, work
autonomously as well as in a team setting, and be creative in solving problems.
Educational Objectives:
-Gain crucial skills researching artists, historical periods in preparation for a future
career at a museum, gallery, or arts organization
-Learn the fundamental components of organizing an exhibition including
research, updating the exhibition checklist, assist in revising the exhibition
floorplan, drafting correspondence and participating in discussions in the
museum office.
Requirements:
-Coursework in American history ideal
-Research experience in Museum or Academic setting
-Strong self-motivation and work ethic
-Good communication and strong interpersonal skills
-Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
-Reliable and be able to work independently
-College upperclassmen or graduate students preferred, interested in learning
about museum exhibitions and best practices in museums
