Summer Internship IMLS
IMLS Internship Opportunity, Office of Museum Service
Are you passionate about museums and the impact they have on individuals and communities? If you have an interest in learning the breadth and depth of museums of all sizes and disciplines, this could be a unique learning opportunity for you!
Gain experience at the nation’s primary source of federal support for museums and libraries, and build your resume for the future. With a mission to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grant-making, research, and policy development, internships in the Office of Museum Services (OMS) at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) are designed to introduce graduate candidates in museum studies, or other related programs, to grant-making and analysis, trend studies, and research which help museums and libraries deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive.
What will you do? We are looking for interns for summer 2019 and beyond who can dedicate up to 20 hours per week. Interns will work closely with six portfolio teams (Diversity and Inclusion, Professional Development, Learning, Collections, Digital Technology, and Community) within the Office of Museum Services. The overall learning experience will include working on projects such as:
-conducting scans and analysis of OMS grants, special projects and initiatives
-conducting research and compilation on trends and studies
-helping with presentations and convenings
-learning about the multilayered dynamics of grants management in action by participating in various OMS meetings as relevant
-learning about other IMLS departments and their work.
Process and Timeline: Interested graduate students are encouraged to send their resumes (with two references), cover letter stating which portfolio team best aligns with their interests (if you are not sure of any one particular portfolio area but are open to any or all areas, please indicate that), and one writing sample to Reagan Moore, Museum Program Officer, by April 1, 2019. Internships will begin in early June and will extend through August. If you have any questions, please contact Reagan Moore, Museum Program Officer, at (202) 653-4637 or rmoore@imls.gov. We look forward to receiving your application. Please note that this internship is a part-time, voluntary position, but can be applied toward academic credit if requested.
Want to be considered for the future? Submit your application materials, indicating your availability in your cover letter, and we will hold your application for future consideration.
