INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Richard Avedon Foundation is a private, non-profit, artist foundation dedicated to preserving the work of Richard Avedon. The Foundation is the caretaker of Avedon’s archive, which includes: the negatives and contacts spanning his six-decade long career, his engraver’s prints for publication, his edition and exhibition prints, as well as an abundance of letters, journals and tear-sheets that documented his entire career. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity for students to be involved with the work, formation and growth of this institution.
Interns will play an integral part in most major Foundation endeavors and, depending on level of experience and aptitude, will assume varying degrees of responsibility. Interns will be involved in each of the following projects, with an emphasis on archiving:
The Archive Project
The Richard Avedon Archive Project is a unique opportunity to view the full body of Richard Avedon’s work. Many of the negatives and prints that interns handle and catalog are unpublished and never viewed outside of the Foundation.
Interns are trained in proper print and negative handling procedures. They research Avedon’s photographic sittings and scan in the choices from each sitting. Photoshop is used to import images and enter them into an art-specific database. The Foundation staff trains interns in all technical skills.
Book Projects
From mock-ups to event planning, our interns help with all aspects of fine-art book production. Additionally, they will meet and interact with master printers, retouchers, typographers, graphic designers, editors, and publishers. A book project provides real world experience for interns of all levels.
Rights and Reproduction
Our interns have the opportunity to help with the management of Richard Avedon’s copyright and are involved in various elements of book and magazine reproduction. Interns research initial queries as well as provide reference scans of published work.
Galleries and Exhibitions
Interns assist Foundation staff with all facets of gallery shows and exhibitions. Experience includes everything from initial concepts to curatorial concerns.
We ask that our interns be professional, reliable, discreet, detail orientated and able to work alone and as a team. A keen interest in photography is a requirement.
We prefer that our interns have gallery and museum experience and a basic understanding of Photoshop and FileMaker pro. This is not a requirement.
Fall interns should be able to make a part-time commitment of at least 2-3 days per week (9:30 am – 5:30 pm, M-F) at the Foundation’s midtown-west Manhattan office. This internship is paid and will begin mid September.
Applications for Fall 2017 positions should be submitted by e-mail no later than August 15, 2017. Applications should include a cover letter stating your name, school, and a description of your interest in our internship program as well as a resume. Email: avedon@avedonfoundation.org. The subject line should read: Archive Intern.
