CAMPUS NEWS: GROUNDBREAKING QUECHUA DICTIONARY CREATED BY GSAS FACULTY AND ALUMNI

 
 
Congratulations to Quechua language instructor and GSAS faculty member Odi Gonzales, who with the help of two alumnus from the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (Christine Mladic Janney & Emily Fjaellen Thompson), created a groundbreaking Quechua-English-Spanish dictionary that was just published by Hippocrene Books. A collaboration process 10 years in the making, this invaluable resource helps position NYU’s Quechua program at the forefront of the field. CAMPUS NEWS: 7 GSAS Students Win Fulbright Scholarships

We are thrilled to announce that seven GSAS students have been accepted as winners of the Fulbright Scholarship! 

Many thanks to the substantial number of faculty who encouraged students to apply for a Fulbright, mentored them through the application process, and volunteered for the Fulbright interviewing committees. CAMPUS NEWS: Claude Desplan Elected to the National Academy of Science

We are pleased to announce that Claude Desplan, Silver Professor of Biology, has been elected to the National Academy of Science. Professor Desplan is not only a superb researcher, but a dedicated teacher and mentor to Junior Faculty in the Biology department, the Faculty of Arts and Science, and the University at large. In addition to his presence here in New York, he also is a co-director of the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and teaches at the NYUAD campus. 

Professor Desplan is the fifth member of the National Academy of Science in the FAS Science Faculty.

CAMPUS NEWS: Congratulations to Master’s Students and Alumni from Human Skeletal Biology (Anthropology)

 
A big congratulations to the following master’s students and alumni from the Human Skeletal Biology program in the Department of Anthropology for their accomplishments:
 
Emma Lagan and Dan Ehlrich, for their win of best Student Poster Prize and the national AAPA meeting (pictured above). 
Victoria Dominguez, for her recent hire in a tenure-line position at CUNY Lehman where she will teach Forensic Anthropology (and also be a resource faculty in the NYU Human Skeletal Biology MA).
Michala Stock, for a postdoctoral appointment to work at Cayo, and also a tenure track position at High Point in North Carolina (where she will teach anatomy in the Dept of Exercise Science).
Tisa Loewen, Justin Goldstein, and Molly Miranker, for each of their acceptances to multiple doctoral programs, including ASU, UNLV and Texas State.
Helen Alesbury, for her win of the GSAS Distinguished MA award in the Social Sciences.

EVENT RECAP: 2018 GSAS Threesis Academic Challenge

This year’s 2018 GSAS Threesis Academic Challenge was an incredible success! With the challenge to present their graduate research in just three minutes, armed with only a single PowerPoint slide, nearly 100 master’s students from departments and programs across GSAS applied to the program, over 80 completed mentoring, and a final group of over 50 advanced to the Qualifying Rounds. A huge thank you to our esteemed GSAS faculty who aided us in serving as expert judges from a range of fields, and, after careful deliberation, selected twelve finalists who would take the stage of the Eisner and Lubin Auditorium in the Kimmel Center for Student Life on April 14th, 2018 and compete in the Final Round for the coveted title of Threesis Champion.

An audience made up of GSAS students, faculty, friends, and family–as well as alumni from the MCAA–attended the Threesis Finals and listened to incredible presentations from our finalists.Topics ranged from the use of facial-recognition to detect empathy, to examining the long tradition of giving books as gifts, and changing the world through songwriting. As always, the presentations were compelling and captivated both the judges and the audience.

After much deliberation by our final judges and our traditional audience vote, prizes and awards were bestowed by the winner of the 2017 Audience Choice award, Loren Dent (International Relations, 2017), the 2017 Threesis Champion, Sarah Stodder (Journalism, 2017), the President of the MCAA, Calvin Vinitwatanakhun (Math in Finance, 2014), and the GSAS Dean Phil Harper.

All finalists, judges, and audiences later gathered for a reception to celebrate the incredible achievement of this year’s Threesis competitors. The research and scholarship produced and presented by master’s students in the Graduate School continues to grow and succeed in both scope and depth. Great job, everyone!
