Our very own Iván Espinosa (Performance Studies, ’18) was published in Caustic Frolic, an online student-run publication organized by master’s students from the Center for Experimental Humanities in the Graduate School of Arts and Science.
Iván’s essay, entitled, “Landscapes and the Living,” contemplates the notion of if landscapes were actually actors and performances that could be manifested on stage, beyond simply scenery. This was also the primary concept he highlighted in his 2018 GSAS Threesis Academic Challenge presentation, which focused on the idea of eco-centric theater and mushrooms as performers in that realm. Iván posits that acknowledging landscapes as actual sentient beings presents a profound opportunity and great potential in American drama.

“[This] could awake us to the other social, intelligent, living beings that are implicated, with us, in this earthly existence,” he writes.
