ACADEMIC STANDARDS:
Attendance:
Attendance to class is required. Two unexcused absences will lower the final grade by one letter. Each additional absence will decrement the grade an additional letter. Students are expected to attend class on time. Lateness in excess of twenty minutes will be considered an absence.
Grading:
At our first class all students start with a perfect (100% or ”A”) grade. This grade is affected by the quality and timely submission of assignments, record of attendance, amount of class participation, and willingness to experiment, as well as written and rich media web-based documentation. Grades are awarded using a scale from five to zero where five is the highest grade possible.
documentation within class website = 25%
experiments and projects = 35%
mid-term presentation = 15%
final presentation = 20%
in-class participation = 5%
The sum of the above percentages determines the final grade.
Unless otherwise stated, website entries are due twenty-four hours before class.
Assignments submitted after class will be decremented one numeric grade each additional twenty-four hour period. Missed presentations cannot be made up and will receive a zero. Non-completion of an assignment will be considered zero in value. The lowest grade that will be issued for any project or assignment is a zero.
Materials written for presentation and/or web publication must conform to one of the current Oxford, Harvard, MLA, American Sociological Association (ASA), or American Psychological Association (APA), style guidelines. Students at all levels of ability are encouraged to research and visit NYU’s Expository Writing Center on Lafayette Street.
Blog posts are modeled as research papers where citations are correctly used and formatted (which must open in new windows), and contain references from scholarly sources such as peer-reviewed journals, textbooks (from reputable publishers; e.g. NYU Press, Wiley and Sons, MIT Press), first-hand interviews, and other correctly formatted sources.
