Highlighting NYU Washington, DC students and their experiences!
Students from NYU, Boston University, the Lutheran Colleges, University of California, and the Washington Internship Institute came together during their semesters in DC to make nearly 1000 sandwiches to donate to those in need!

When you think about Washington, DC, the performing arts probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind – except for political theatre, perhaps – and the same is likely true when you think about the type of college student who chooses to study there. However, future policymakers, lawyers, business leaders and more showcased their artistic talents on Friday, November 16, at the New York University Global Academic Center in Washington, DC during its Violet Live event.

“I recently went to Julián Castro in Conversation with Jonathan Allen at Sixth & I. I was excited to have the opportunity to learn about Castro, a potential 2020 presidential candidate, and his life growing up in relation to his political career. I’ve had the chance to see several major national political figures speak this semester, including another possible 2020 presidential candidate, John Kerry. I’ve been noticing how politicians present themselves in front of potential voters, how they campaign on specific issues, and how they carefully field and piece together answers to questions. I hope through these different sessions I’ve begun to develop a more sophisticated way to evaluate these politicians and critique their views. During this recent event. I found Julián Castro to be very professional and prepared without being impersonal, something I greatly appreciated. However, I was disappointed in how he spoke about climate change. Surprisingly, he was asked twice about his stance on climate action, and despite advocating for action and speaking of his own previous efforts, he seemed reluctant to position himself as a leader on climate change. This left me less enthusiastic about him as a future candidate, but in all, the event was insightful. I am also hopeful that climate change will become a more central issue for candidates as the next election nears.”

“A few weeks ago, I went to the National Mall. We saw the National World War II Memorial, FDR Memorial, MLK Memorial, amongst others. I enjoyed this experience a lot because it allowed me to take in the sights of famous D.C. monuments that I wouldn’t have visited otherwise. I personally enjoyed the National World War II Memorial the most because it reminded me of how many loved ones visit the memorial and receive a sense of peace from their loved ones’ remembrance. I think it was eye-opening and I’m really glad I attended the excursion. Our personal tour bus was also a plus! :)”

NYUDC has been an extremely welcoming, extroverted, and inclusive environment. In just five days, I was exposed to more academic and professional opportunities than I originally thought to be possible.”

“I attended the NYU Stern Executive MBA event at NYU Washington, DC with guest speaker, Brian Brooks, Executive VP at Fannie Mae, and thought the event was both engaging and fascinating. As one of the few underclassmen present, I previously thought that I wouldn’t be able to understand anything the speaker would be talking about, since nearly everyone who was in attendance was an older, EMBA student. Instead, Brooks made it really easy to follow along, and it was amusing or, better yet, painfully amusing to see him attempt to crack jokes. Having had no academic exposure in the subject matter of housing, I learned a lot from just his one hour long talk. Now, I know what exactly Fannie Mae is; the magnitude of housing’s influence in the economy; the effect of an increasingly diverse American population on the economy; and how solutions have been created to combat the problems arising from aging baby boomers, revolutionary millennials, and the overall changing dynamics of our society.”
