Renzo Esposito (NYU Gallatin) | Dialogo Diverso | Quito, Ecuador
I arrived in Quito, Ecuador on June 1st, just as the city prepared for Pride Month. It’s an exciting time here, and I couldn’t have picked a better moment to start my internship with Dialogo Diverso. This organization plays a crucial role in the local LGBTQ+ community, organizing the Pride march and a series of related events. I felt like I arrived at the heart of the action.
The communications team at Dialogo Diverso, though small, is a powerhouse of dedication and purpose. With just two full-time staff members and some part time volunteers, we achieved remarkable results. I’ve dived right in, assisting with filming, editing, and producing videos for the diverse activities. Moreover, I’ve been crafting graphics and providing on-the-ground support at events. Each day presents a new challenge, and I love the dynamic nature of the work.
The warmth and friendliness of the people here have been nothing short of amazing. I’ve been embraced with open arms since I set foot in this city. My colleagues have taken me out to try the local cuisine, and I’m already forging friendships that I’m confident will endure beyond my time here.
Today, we hosted a massive picnic in the context of the pride events that attracted over 1,000 attendees. It was an all-day event filled with laughter, music, and a palpable sense of community. I was responsible for capturing the event on video, documenting everything from candid moments to vibrant performances.
My initial impressions of Quito and my work with Dialogo Diverso are overwhelmingly positive. The energy, the stories, and the community spirit have already made this a transformative experience. I’m eager to dive deeper into the projects and continue contributing to such meaningful work.
