The field that I am working on is called the Ironbound, the eastward of Newark New Jersey. The biggest organization that I could find that is comparable to Ironbound is the Ironbound Community Corporation. The ironbound community corporation, as stated by their about page, “dates back 50 years, when residents came together to resolve the lack of childcare in their community. Since then it has grown into an organization that advocates as well as serves the community through social, educational, and health programs. From its humble beginnings, the Ironbound Community Corporation has grown exponentially, providing various services and programs to nearly 1,000 people daily. They’re educating residents on their rights and empowering them to take control of their future. Today, the ICC provides educational services, job and financial training for parents and adults, children’s after-school and learning programs, and a community farm, as well as activism around housing rights and environmental justice.”
I always view the communal and the individual as interconnected. The bigger the community, in my perspective, the bigger or smaller the weight of the individual, it all depends on the systems built as the society grows. I fully believe that combining the work of the coalition with the work of the Ironbound Community Corporation would promote a more mutually beneficial reality, but this takes governmental support and maturity.
