The School of the Earth was born from a dedicated class of students lead by professors Mitchel Joachim and Peder Anker at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, within NYU. The class began by analyzing case studies of prominent examples of innovative global design. These served as sources of inspiration and reference for the student’s visions for a greener future. Redesigning Gallatin was the choice of subject because it incorporated elements of both designing for a changing climate, while also relevant to the social interests of the students lives at NYU.The design process sparked debates about how to reconcile issues students saw and felt in their Gallatin experiences as well as how to address those flaws moving forward, and thinking differently. What resulted was a collaborative effort of subcommittee dedicated various aspects of the larger project. A professional, to scale model, book, website and gallery exhibition resulted from weeks of research, creativity and skillful execution. The design process sparked debates about how to reconcile issues students saw and felt in their Gallatin experiences as well as how to address those flaws moving forward, and thinking differently.
The School of the Earth is a future Gallatin, prioritizing the environment and adapting to the new climate ahead of us. It incorporates a sustainable way of life and an understanding of human impact on the environment into a university curriculum that is also more accessible and focused on creative and innovative learning. The project is about a Gallatin community that is aware of, interacts ethically with, and learns from the surrounding communities. This building is redesigned as a space that promotes these ideas, and actively encourages environmental awareness.
