EAST-UA 953: Transpacific Racism & Anti-Racism
The course examines trans-Pacific encounters between East Asia and the U.S., with a particular focus on the crossings of minor literatures emerging out of the Japanese and American empires. Using a kind of parallax vision, this course seeks to see one side of the Pacific from the perspective of the other. How can we think of white supremacy alongside the racism of Japanese imperialism in East Asia? How are intra-Asian politics transformed once they land stateside? How has blackness been historically received in Japan and how what kind of possibilities have black thinkers envisioned in the Asia Pacific? We will read from comparative minority history, literature, and global theories of race.
