EAST-UA 953 Topics in Japanese Studies: Telling History Through Visuals
Telling history through visuals – a class that teaches students how to tell historical narratives using visual cultures such as Japanese advertisements, propaganda, art, and film Whereas most histories are created by exploring archives for texts, this course teaches students how to use visuals to construct a historical narrative. Focusing on various images from 20th-century Japan, students will learn how to write history using visuals as their primary sources. We will look at plastic art, advertisements, propaganda, film, and other visual sources to better understand Japan’s modern history and relationships with its neighbors.
