What?

Google apps for education at NYU includes 2 categories:

Core apps: these apps are protected (no data mining)

  • Email (NYU gmail)
  • Calendar
  • Drive (cloud-based storage space for files; allows for the creation of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, and more)
    • Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides
  • Contacts
  • Groups (forum and group email tool)
  • Sites (website)
  • Hangouts (synchronous video calls)

Commercial apps: these apps are not protected in the same way as core apps and require that you opt in (acknowledge the terms of use before activating). As of September 2014, here are some commercial apps: Google+ (not including Hangouts), YouTube, Picassa, Google Reader, and Blogger.

Why?

The core apps allow for easy communication, collaborative content creation/editing, and sharing. Everything is stored in the cloud, so you can access these apps from most Internet-enabled devices.

Please note that in Spring 2016, NYU IT will be piloting the integration of Google Groups and Drive into NYU Classes. Contact us for more information.

 Where?

You can access NYU Google Apps for Education by logging in to NYU Home, clicking on the Home tab, and then scrolling down to the NYU Google section of options.  Also, please note that Google Drive/Groups is now integrated into NYU Classes. Please contact us is you are interested in this feature.
