What is H5P?

In the dynamic landscape of higher education, fostering student engagement and creating effective learning experiences are constant priorities. NYU just integrated H5P, a great tool used to create activities that do just that.

H5P offers a wide array of content types (currently over 40!), including interactive videos (with embedded questions), quizzes (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, drag-and-drop), timelines, flashcards, interactive presentations, image hotspots, virtual tours (360), branching scenarios, and much more. These can all be created and added directly to Brightspace. Student engagement with these activities can also be sent to the Grades tool so students can credit for their work.

Exercises created in H5P can be super useful to help faculty:

  • Boost Student Engagement: Move beyond passive consumption of material. Interactive elements require students to actively participate, making learning more dynamic and memorable.
  • Check for Understanding: Easily embed formative assessments (low-stakes quizzes, drag-and-drop activities) directly within learning materials to gauge comprehension.
  • Simplify Content Creation: Build sophisticated interactions without needing specialized software or coding skills.
  • Enrich Existing Materials: Enhance lecture recordings with interactive video questions, or make readings more engaging with embedded concept checks.
  • Support Diverse Learning Needs: Different H5P tools cater to various learning preferences, from visual (timelines, hotspots) to kinesthetic (drag-and-drop).
