Summer 2024 Teaching to Engage Shoutouts

In partnership with the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS), the Office of Teaching Excellence & Innovation offers a 3-week asynchronous course to graduate students who hope to learn about pedagogy and educational technology. This course is called Teaching to Engage. To date, we’ve had 77 graduates from this offering!

We had 13 new graduates in our latest summer 2024 cohort. Each of them created their own learning experiences in a Brightspace practice site. Here are some of the highlights from our latest cohort.

Incoming Ph.D. student Trisha Gupta with the English department created an interactive lecture using VoiceThread. Applications of active learning experiences like this can really help students more meaningfully engage with course content.

Cristina Coppa, an incoming graduate student with the Experimental Humanities and Social Engagement program (XE), created a thoughtful social annotation exercise in Perusall. Here, they have students follow the SQ5R strategy as they engage in discussion with each other around this text.

Graduate student with the Center for European & Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) Garrett Palmer used Annoto to have students engage with a piece of media called, “What is History?” With guiding questions, students are able to respond to prompts and each other on this video.

Teaching to Engage is a rich, flexible, and highly adaptable course appropriate for instructors at any level. Instructors will leave this course with a deeper understanding of their own personal pedagogy as well as the various educational technologies NYU offers. The Office of Teaching Excellence & Innovation is more than happy to work your department to facilitate a custom cohort of TTE. Feel free to reach out to asteaching@nyu.edu to do so.
