As another academic year approaches, we would be hard pressed to find an instructor who hasn’t at least heard of ChatGPT or other Generative AI tools. The widespread availability and use of this technology has caused quite a stir, leading many in the field of Higher Education to reconsider what it means to evaluate student learning when traditional methods are disrupted by the power of text and image generators.
So what’s an instructor to do to keep up, especially when this technology continues to change at such a rapid pace? While expert recommendations continue to evolve, one thing is clear, instructors cannot rely on the prohibition and detection of AI to maintain academic integrity and student learning.
With these challenges in mind, the Office of the Provost is pleased to host four virtual workshops and a “Zoomside Chat” around ChatGPT and other generative AI tools on August 24th and 29th. Join these interactive virtual sessions to learn the current recommendations for teaching in the world of Generative AI. Among the workshop topics include Evaluating & Acknowledging AI–Generated Text, (Re)designing Assignments & Assessments Using Generative AI, as well as opportunities to discuss this issue with fellow instructors. See the full schedule and registration links on the NYU Gen AI Workshop Flyer.
The Provost’s office has also provided a guide for Adapting Writing Assignments to Generative AI. If you are looking for student facing resources, you can share the Library’s ChatGPT and Academic Integrity page. Additional guidance can be found on the Teaching and Learning with AI web page.
As you prepare for the new semester, the FAS Office of EdTech is here to help you with all of your educational technology needs, including Brightspace and other tools. Please contact your department liaison for an individual consultation.
