“‘Teatro de urgencia” in Translation: María Teresa León, Langston Hughes, and the Harlem Suitcase Theater”
Evelyn Scaramella is Associate Professor of Spanish and the Co-Director of the Lasallian Women and Gender Resource Center at Manhattan College in the Bronx, New York. She is the co-editor with Regina Galasso of an edited book volume, Avenues of Translation: The City in Iberian and Latin American Writing (Bucknell UP, 2019). Her scholarly writing has appeared in PMLA, Massachusetts Review, Translation Review, Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, among other journals. Her book manuscript in progress, Anti-Fascist Archives: Translation, the Avant-Garde, and the Spanish Civil War, explores the literary history of Hispanophone and Anglophone writers and their translation practices during the Spanish Civil War and exile period.

Ameya Tripathi is a PhD candidate at Columbia University in the Department of English and Comparative Literature and Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. He is currently working on a dissertation titled Documents of Revolution: Literacy, Translation, and Working-Class Internationalism in the Spanish Civil War which compares local with visiting writers (such as George Orwell, Nancy Cunard, Mateo Santos and María Teresa León) to evaluate various diasporic political approaches to documenting the war.

Leslie J. Harkema is Associate Professor of Spanish and director of the Division of Spanish and Portuguese in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Baylor University. She is the author of Spanish Modernism and the Poetics of Youth: From Miguel de Unamuno to La Joven Literatura (Toronto Iberic, 2017). Her current research focuses on the history of translation among the languages of the Iberian Peninsula from the late 18th century to the early 20th, with particular attention to the intersection of translation and gender.

James D. Fernández is Professor of Spanish Literature at New York University (NYU), and Director of NYU Madrid. He is the co-curator of the exhibition “Emigrantes invisibles: Españoles en Estados Unidos, 1868-1945” which, after an eleven-month run in Madrid (2020), will re-open in Gijón, Asturias, at the Centro Cultural Antiguo Instituto, on 18 November 2021 (until 6 February).

Anne Donlon, PhD, is the editor of a volume of correspondence and poems, Langston Hughes, Nancy Cunard, and Louise Thompson: Poetry, Politics, and Friendship in the Spanish Civil War (Lost & Found CUNY Poetics Documents). She has published on writing and activism in the 1920s and 1930s in the U.S., Britain, and Spain in publications including PMLA, Palimpsest: A Journal on Women, Gender, and the Black International, Modernism/modernity, Lateral, and the Massachusetts Review. She also writes about the intersection of archives and digital scholarship.
