How can I attend the Summer Institute?
Please register for the 2021 Summer Institute here to receive the most up-to-date information on the week’s events. Zoom links will be posted for each of the sessions on the corresponding page for the 2021 Institute. If you are a panelist or graduate student showcase participant, you will receive a separate email with more information and instructions to log on to the Zoom Webinar as a Participant. We ask that all Participants log on to the Webinar 15 minutes prior to the start of the session.
Session Descriptions:
- Panels: Convened by faculty chairs, panels will feature three speakers, who will each present for 15 minutes. The student moderator will then lead a conversation with pre-prepared questions as well as questions from the audience written in the chat box. The Webinar will then open to general questions and discussion among attendees. We will post password-protected papers on the el taller website the week before the Summer Institute.
- Showcase: The Graduate Student Research Showcase is an opportunity for graduate students to share their research in a communal setting and receive tailored feedback in small groups. Students will present their research in five minutes in an open Zoom Meeting. Following the presentations, the Faculty Discussion Leaders will host Zoom Meetings with two students each for in-depth engagement with their research. Conference attendees may choose to attend any of these sessions, which will be posted on the el taller website.
The Showcase will be limited to 10 students to ensure the dynamic interchange of ideas and participants will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Please register for the Showcase here. - Conversations with Authors: The reading groups provide an opportunity for our community to re-read recent Iberian scholarship together. The Coordinating Committee has invited three scholars to discuss influential articles they have published, share its place within their scholarship, and reflect with the el taller community on its importance for the field. The three articles will be posted on the el taller website in advance of the Summer Institute to ensure robust participation in each of the three sessions, which will be facilitated by members of the Coordinating Committee.
- Roundtable: The roundtable session emphasizes organic collaboration and dialogue amongst the panelists on rural Spain and its many representations. Led by a faculty chair, the panelists will briefly share their reflections on and contributions to the study of rurality in Spain before engaging in a group conversation. Following the conversation, the chair will open the session to questions, comments, and contributions from the audience.
- Conversation: Join us for a public-facing conversation between Pedro Costa, one of Portugal’s most important film directors, and Glòria Salvadó-Corretger, Associate Professor of Audiovisual Communication at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Organized and introduced by Sara Nadal-Melsió (NYU) and supported by the KJCC and NYU’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the final event of 2021’s Summer Institute will be streamed on Facebook Live and YouTube. Francisco Pires (NYU) will moderate the discussion and pose questions posted in the Facebook Chat and Youtube Comments from attendees.
