Project title: Breaking Stool
Description:
I want to make a simple structure, modern style stool, in the two sides of which I want to do some artistic treatment, such as some abstract hollow shape.
Second, the size of this stool should be slightly small because it is not usually used for daily sitting, but in the need to take a higher height of the items in the cabinets designed.
Motivation:
Since I will move to a new house this year and the new house has higher ceilings, so the cabinets will be a little higher. In order to get the things in the high cabinets more easily, I want a stool that I can both step on and occasionally sit on. Secondly, I like to read books near the bookshelves, and this kind of stool with small size gives me a feeling of reading books in the library. And, I would like to make a relatively larger project out of wood (compared to the previous projects).
Three examples of objects:
1.
This is a wood step stool designed for small children and used in the bathroom, the maker used screws and glue to fix it. I really like the contrast of colors, I think the structure of this piece is simple, which is what I appreciate, and the color matching makes it very comfortable.

2.
This is a simple structure stool with beautiful sides. “The legs are deceptively carved and embedded in a transparent material in order to achieve this illusion.” I am not sure if this is made of plastic, epoxy, or other materials.

3.
This may be a table, but I think if the size is reduced, it can be completely used as a stool. The structure of this piece is very simple, the design of the sides is also simple, but very artistic, and it has another board under the topmost board, so you can put a few small items.
Compare and contrast the examples:
I think all three styles lean towards modern art, and all have a simpler structure. I think if I want to do step stool completely, then the structure of the first one is more suitable, as well as more secure. But if we talk about the side pattern, I prefer the second one because it is more innovative. But the third one uses the least amount of external materials, only wood.
Artist:
I chose the work of Eugene Tomsky, the second example I showed above was created by him. His works are simple in structure, many of them linking wood and transparent materials, or metal. And, just like the color contrast between wood and transparent materials, he likes to make color contrasts. But I’m not sure how he connects the different materials.
Current build plan:
Material:
*Maple (maybe another kind of wood or just paint maples into different colors): 1 piece: 30cm*25cm*thickness(3cm or more is fine); 2 pieces: 25*10*thickness(3cm or more is fine)
*Wood Glue
*Sandpaper
*propylene
*epoxy
Construction steps:
- Cut all the wood to the right size. The top planks are easy to cut, but the side planks need to be cut into the right shape, such as several long wood sticks.
- Paint the sticks with propylene/ if just use different types of woods, this step can be skipped
- Join the woods used for the sides with glue. This step is for combining with epoxy afterward.
- Make the sides of the stool. The cut planks need to be put into a mold and then poured into epoxy. Afterward, when the epoxy is dry, the two planks for the sides are cut and sanded more precisely.
- Join several boards together. Use glue or joint skills, I am not sure if the glue will hold firmly.
