Mechanics of Penetration
There has been a flurry of interest in recent years in the study of the response of granular media subject to impact and penetration. A review of the literature on the subject, with emphasis on deep penetration was presented by researchers at NYU. Many of the global aspects of penetration into granular media have been elucidated, including (1) the salient features of projectile deceleration, (2) the role of packing density in penetration, (3) reasonable estimation of terminal depth of penetration, (4) the role of projectile properties in penetration depth, (5) understanding of transient events such as cratering and ricochet (5) modeling some important aspects of penetration events using numerical and analytical methods.
