In order to understand the ballistic penetration of a granular material such as sand, the interactions between the projectile and the grains need to be determined. DSR is a highly effective technique for investigating the internal displacement and velocity fields of sand subject to ballistic impact by rods. High-resolution displacement data can be generated for relatively large samples whose behavior is representative of bulk material.
