Visual impairments are becoming more and more diffused as the population ages. To help people who are blind or low vision to regain independence, orientation and mobility trainings are arranged. However, training sessions in real environments may prove dangerous, especially when the patient is still not acquainted with those skills.
In their new paper published in journal Virtual Reality, our PhD candidate Fabiana Sofia Ricci, Postdoctoral Associate Alain Boldini, and Professor Maurizio Porfiri, in collaboration with Mahya Beheshti and Prof. John-Ross Rizzo from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, have developed a virtual reality platform in which people who are blind or low vision can practice their orientation and mobility skills in a realistic and completely safe environment.
