Classical theories for fluid-structure interactions used in the design of the hull of ships typically consider only thin plates, which are exposed to water on one side and to air on the other (on the inside of the ship).
In this new work, our team – Simon Carrillo Segura, Peng Zhang, led by Prof. Maurizio Porfiri – provide a mathematical theory for thick plates interacting with water. These structures show interesting through-the-thickness deformations, which are modified by the interaction with the fluid and cannot be captured by classical theories.
