The theory of solution is a fundamental one in chemistry and physics. This theory is deeply connected to a variety of phenomena, such as diffusion.
In their new paper, our postdoctoral associate Alain Boldini and Prof. Maurizio Porfiri show a discrepancy in the theory of solutions. They prove that the classical hypotheses of ideality and diluteness are not enough to derive Fick’s law of diffusion. The hypotheses of incompressibility and small molar volume of solutes should be added to the model.
