The problems that rapidly growing cities face are, among many, providing reliable transportation, access to electrical power and water, ensuring the health and wellness of the populations, preparing for waves of migration due to environmental change, as well as supporting local governments to be responsive to the needs of the citizens.
Since urban environments are complex, social-economic-technical-environmental systems, resolving these numerous issues requires an interdisciplinary approach that combines science and technology.
