NYU-Mitsui DSL STEM Learning Lab: A Middle School STEM Initiative from NYU Engineering

Calling all middle school students in New York City: Join an exciting FREE STEM program from NYU Tandon School of Engineering online this Spring!

Led by researchers at the Dynamical Systems Laboratory, the program consists of 18 lessons on different topics, like physics, biology, computer programming, and robotics. Participating students will build catapults and bristle bots, and learn how to program microcontrollers. The students will receive a free kit mailed to their home containing the materials for all hands-on activities. See details below for more information.

Who is eligible to participate?
NYC middle school students in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

When will the program take place?
We will meet online Thursdays from 4pm-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-12pm during April, May and June.

April dates: 27th, 29th
May dates: 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 18th, 20th, 25th, and the 27th
June dates: 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22rd, and the 24th

Please check your schedule to make sure you can attend all the sessions before you apply!

Where will the program take place?
We will meet on Zoom (meeting information will be emailed to admitted students and their families). The program also includes a free trip to the New York Aquarium (participation is voluntary) and a remote tour of robotics and engineering research labs.

How do I pay for the program?
You don’t! The program is free thanks to the Mitsui USA Foundation.

What do I need to bring?
We will send participants their engineering kits by mail. You will need a working laptop (Apple or Windows) to use for the lessons.

Can others in my house join?
Parents and siblings are more than welcome to join the sessions.

How do I apply?
The application is available here and is due by April 15th.

How will I know if I’m accepted?
Everyone who applies will receive an email from NYU during the week of April 17th letting you know the status of your application. Unfortunately, the number of students we can accept is limited and we won’t be able to offer a slot to every applicant.
