A Conversation with Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin
On April 25, NYU Africa House hosted Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhi, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange, in the Grand Hall at the NYU Global Center. Dr. Gabre-Madhi is an internationally recognized thought leader on agricultural marketing in Africa and global development.
The Ethiopia Commodity Exchange is a national multi-commodity exchange that provides low-cost, secure marketplace services that benefit all agricultural market stakeholders. It will also make a unique and unusual transition to futures trading down the line. The exchange is “based on learning from the global experience, but tailored to our country’s conditions,” explained Dr. Gabre-Madhi. As a small actor oriented exchange established for the informal market, it brings together innovative, creative, and passionate business people. “We have not built an exchange for the suits,” she emphasized.
