Phase 2: Post 1 Questions for Vernelle Noel

The Ted talk with Vernelle was very intriguing. To me the message I got from her speech is that tradition and progressive innovation can coexist and honestly I think she might argue that tradition and culture are essential to any innovation. I think tradition is what makes innovations more personal and humanistic, and I think she is just trying to hold on to the human aspect of day to day things such as fabrication. It opened my mind to a lot of ideas regarding what it means to allow traditional methods to sort of die out and  so willingly submerge ourselves into any new technological advancement.  The question I felt like she was alluding to was, what is it that we, as humans, are choosing to give up in exchange for a faster more efficient lifestyle.

Questions for Vernelle:

1.  The difference between Innovation and Invention (as I understand it) is that innovation improves upon something that has already come into fruition. Whereas inventions are the creation of a product or the introduction of a new process, introduced for the first time. With this being said, would you agree that Innovation thus gives leeway for cultural traditional practices and technology/AI advancements to coexist?

2. What are your thoughts on the argument that countries cannot afford to retain their traditional practices.  With the rise of technological disruptions, how fast we are progressing as a global society as far as technology comes, why would a country (if the country was financially stable to have the luxury of choice) willingly choose not to prioritize keeping up with other advancing countries.

 3.  How do we break this idea that traditional methods and innovation cannot coexist? I ask because I think that a large factor in allowing cultural practices as you talked about in your TedTalk to die off is many people believe you can continue old practices if you want to keep up with the advancement of society.
