The Bridge to the Future curriculum was an expansion from the pilot program Working Bee. The curriculum is designed to support students with IDD engaging in career exploration and vocational skill training in the self-contained classroom setting. It used the Social Cognitive Career Theory and Self-Determination Theory as its main theoretical foundation and aimed to support students’ vocational skills, life skills, as well as self-efficacy and self-determination.

When preliminary results of the Working Bee suggested a positive outcome, my colleagues and I were all very excited about these results. I thus presented the program as a poster at the 2018 AOTA Annual Conference. With the encouragements and feedback received at the conference, I made some changes and further expanded the program. This laid the foundations for the design and development of the Bridge to the Future curriculum.
